Dr. Matthew Lanum Takes the Headache Out of Chiropractic Therapy

The moment you walk into Bernards Sports Chiropractic and Physical Rehabilitation, you are treated like a member of the family. Dr. Matthew Lanum, friendly and approachable, helps make the experience of attaining optimal health an enjoyable one.

Highly skilled in his field, Dr. Lanum studied at the University of Rhode Island and received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College. Recently, he completed the certification process to become a PGA Tour Chiropractor. Dr. Lanum’s success comes from his knowledgeable background in conjunction with his laid-back bedside manner, which puts his clients at ease. Focusing on natural medicine, he loves to see results based purely on holistic methods like chiropractic care. In addition to his chiropractic and physical rehabilitation work, he also has an acupuncturist and massage therapist on staff.

Dr. Lanum became interested in chiropractic from an early age. He explains, “At fifteen, I bent over to pick up a baseball and didn’t get back up.” As fate would have it, he was directed to Dr. Karen Walters, who became his most important mentor on his chiropractic journey. Dr. Lanum recalls attending chiropractic seminars with her while he was in high school and she continues to be an important part of his life today. His personal experience with chiropractic inspired him to help people enjoy their lives through natural and medication-free methods. He says, “I love when I meet a patient that hasn’t been helped yet, who has been living with pain for a long time, and being able to show them how chiropractic care can help them have a more active, comfortable  and pain-free life.” Much like each person is unique, each treatment is personalized for the individual, taking the whole body into consideration.

A patient reveals, “I was referred to Dr. Lanum for lower back pain following a rear-impact car accident. After several weeks of treatments, consisting of heat with electrical muscle stimulation, chiropractic adjustments, customized stretching and weight training exercises, my progress continued and my symptoms unexpectedly disappeared! Dr. Lanum spends a great deal of time with his patients. He has a wonderful sense of humor and is extremely patient. He enabled me to return to my active lifestyle without medication!” Celebrating his twentieth year in business, success stories like this are numerous. He loves working with patients who have sports injuries, as well has pregnant patients, those with herniated disks, fibromyalgia and much more. To ensure his potential clients don’t feel any unnecessary pressure, he offers a free consultation to guarantee he is the right fit for them.

Dr. Lanum’s office proudly offers quality healthcare for the entire community and strives to make the patient as comfortable as possible. Focusing on a wellness lifestyle, Dr. Lanum and his team promise to do everything in their power to “take the headache out of going to a doctor,” pun intended.

Tick Talk

Spring officially sprung on March 21. We have turned our clocks ahead. We are looking forward to warm winds, sunny skies and the smell of fresh cut grass. The daffodils and tulips have recently bloomed and we are just starting with the yard work that comes with the warmer weather.  Sadly, another season has started ramping up.  Tick season.

•             The best form of protection is prevention. Educating oneself about tick activity and how our behaviors overlap with tick habitats is the first step.

•             According to the NJ DOH, in 2022 Hunterdon County led the state with a Lyme disease incidence rate of 426 cases per 100,000 people. The fact is ticks spend approximately 90% of their lives not on a host but aggressively searching for one, molting to their next stage or over-wintering. This is why a tick remediation program should be implemented on school grounds where NJ DOH deems high risk for tick exposure and subsequent attachment to human hosts.

•             Governor Murphy has signed a bill that mandates tick education in NJ public schools. See this for the details.  Tick education must now be incorporated into K-12 school curriculum. See link:

•             May is a great month to remind the public that tick activity is in full swing. In New Jersey, there are many tickborne diseases that affect residents, including Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, Powassan, and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis.

•             For years, the focus has mainly been about protecting ourselves from Lyme disease. But other tick-borne diseases are on the rise in Central Jersey. An increase of incidence of Babesia and Anaplasma are sidelining people too. These two pathogens are scary because they effect our blood cells. Babesia affects the red blood cells and Anaplasma effects the white blood cells.

•             Ticks can be infected with more than one pathogen. When you contract Lyme it is possible to contract more than just that one disease. This is called a co-infection. It is super important to pay attention to your symptoms. See link.
