Premier Pilates and Yoga

YM_DeborahHarris_AJ2_cmykIn 2003, Premier Pilates and Yoga opened the very first fully equipped Pilates studio in Central New Jersey. Deborah Harris, a transplant to the area, arrived to share the knowledge and skill she acquired at the New York City Authentic Pilates Training Program and the Pennsylvania Ballet Pilates Studio. From a humble start, the studio grew steadily to become a home for five full-time Pilates instructors and to offer numerous classes. Premier has evolved into a community center for multiple therapeutic modalities, such as Yoga, Pilates, Prenatal Yoga and the MELT Method.

It didn’t take long for the studio to start garnering local recognition. First, came the features in the Courier News. Then, the studio was featured on BravoTV’s “The Better Half,” before being showcased on StyleTV’s “Jerseylicious.“ This year, Deborah Harris was flown out to the international Pilates conference to be interviewed for a special piece in the upcoming issues of Pilates Style – the premier professional magazine for Pilates professionals.

Finally, Deborah was selected as a Top Ten Finalist in the Next Pilates Anytime Instructor Search Competition. This is a preeminent international competition among some of the most respected Pilates instructors. “It was an honor to be selected by an outstanding panel of judges” said Harris. “Regardless of whether I win or not, it is simply amazing to be recognized by the leaders in the Pilates industry for my teaching ability.” When asked about what drives her, Ms. Harris went on to say that “it is incredibly gratifying to be a part of someone’s journey of healing, or helping a client reach a fitness milestone they never dreamed possible.”

Pilates is a holistic approach capable of restoring function, promoting physical and mental health. This health-boosting approach to well-being is deeply ingrained among the outstanding team of instructors at Premier. Whereas Alanna is able to tap into her dance expertise to enhance her Pilates teaching, Kathy shares the additional insights from her background in personal training. Jeanette took her Pilates expertise to another level by enrolling in and completing a competitive US Pilates Association Training program. Each of the classically trained Pilates instructors at Premier is adept at crafting a unique Pilates experience for each client.

The Premier Pilates team is available for private sessions, duets, Mat, Tower and the legendary Reformer classes. If you haven’t tried Pilates at Premier, you haven’t experience Pilates at its best!

Tick Talk

Spring officially sprung on March 21. We have turned our clocks ahead. We are looking forward to warm winds, sunny skies and the smell of fresh cut grass. The daffodils and tulips have recently bloomed and we are just starting with the yard work that comes with the warmer weather.  Sadly, another season has started ramping up.  Tick season.

•             The best form of protection is prevention. Educating oneself about tick activity and how our behaviors overlap with tick habitats is the first step.

•             According to the NJ DOH, in 2022 Hunterdon County led the state with a Lyme disease incidence rate of 426 cases per 100,000 people. The fact is ticks spend approximately 90% of their lives not on a host but aggressively searching for one, molting to their next stage or over-wintering. This is why a tick remediation program should be implemented on school grounds where NJ DOH deems high risk for tick exposure and subsequent attachment to human hosts.

•             Governor Murphy has signed a bill that mandates tick education in NJ public schools. See this for the details.  Tick education must now be incorporated into K-12 school curriculum. See link:

•             May is a great month to remind the public that tick activity is in full swing. In New Jersey, there are many tickborne diseases that affect residents, including Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, Powassan, and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis.

•             For years, the focus has mainly been about protecting ourselves from Lyme disease. But other tick-borne diseases are on the rise in Central Jersey. An increase of incidence of Babesia and Anaplasma are sidelining people too. These two pathogens are scary because they effect our blood cells. Babesia affects the red blood cells and Anaplasma effects the white blood cells.

•             Ticks can be infected with more than one pathogen. When you contract Lyme it is possible to contract more than just that one disease. This is called a co-infection. It is super important to pay attention to your symptoms. See link.
