DR BROWN’S CBD is a medical grade product line created by Ray Brown, Jr, and sold through Mom N Pop CBD & Wellness shops. Recently, we spoke to Brown about his up-and-coming family-run business.

What was the motivation behind opening Mom N Pop CBD & Wellness Shops?

Basically, it was in memory of my mom. In 2004, she got hurt on a four-wheeler, and for the next ten years, all she was doing was taking medication to stay alive and not feel pain. Ultimately her body just gave up from the inside out. After she passed away in 2014, I found cannabis will often do the trick and you don’t need to take anything else. It’s natural and you don’t need a prescription for it. So that became my big push.

What have you witnessed in terms of feedback from people for using CBD?

We’ve seen people go from taking all kinds of medications for pain to not taking any medications except CBD. We have a lot of people with anxiety and stress who say they found relief with CBD. Just amazing things. People that can’t move their joints or knees start using a cream or a tincture and, before you know it, they’re back to doing things that they haven’t been able to do.

Is it something that happens immediately or does it take a a while?

Recently, a lady that came in that had bad arthritis, especially with one thumb. She put our cooling cream on and couldn’t believe that as she was rubbing it in, she was able to move it more and more. Some people are instantaneous. Those with severe pain might use a tincture, and often it’s five to 20 minutes to feel some effect.

Can you tell me about the products?

My goal with DR BROWN’S CBD was to create a medical grade product at a better price so people could afford it. Most of our oils are $10 to $30 or even $40 less expensive and offer better quality.

Recently you moved your production facility from Florida to North Carolina. Why did you do that?

Growth. We started last June with one store. Now we have five stores and will soon open more. All of our products are made in small batches so it is similar to handcrafted. Now it is just made in a bigger facility.

Have you done any research on why CBD is so effective?

I think it’s because we have a system already in our body, the endocannabinoid system, that was made for CBD and also THC. We have CB1 and CB2 receptors. I’m not a scientist, but that is my theory.

What is the biggest message you’d like to leave with our reader?

We like to educate people about CBD and its potential benefits. We offer free samples. Our customers tend to be 40-80 years old. We like helping people learn about alternatives to pharmaceuticals.

Tick Talk

Spring officially sprung on March 21. We have turned our clocks ahead. We are looking forward to warm winds, sunny skies and the smell of fresh cut grass. The daffodils and tulips have recently bloomed and we are just starting with the yard work that comes with the warmer weather.  Sadly, another season has started ramping up.  Tick season.

•             The best form of protection is prevention. Educating oneself about tick activity and how our behaviors overlap with tick habitats is the first step.

•             According to the NJ DOH, in 2022 Hunterdon County led the state with a Lyme disease incidence rate of 426 cases per 100,000 people. The fact is ticks spend approximately 90% of their lives not on a host but aggressively searching for one, molting to their next stage or over-wintering. This is why a tick remediation program should be implemented on school grounds where NJ DOH deems high risk for tick exposure and subsequent attachment to human hosts.

•             Governor Murphy has signed a bill that mandates tick education in NJ public schools. See this for the details.  Tick education must now be incorporated into K-12 school curriculum. See link:

•             May is a great month to remind the public that tick activity is in full swing. In New Jersey, there are many tickborne diseases that affect residents, including Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, Powassan, and Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis.

•             For years, the focus has mainly been about protecting ourselves from Lyme disease. But other tick-borne diseases are on the rise in Central Jersey. An increase of incidence of Babesia and Anaplasma are sidelining people too. These two pathogens are scary because they effect our blood cells. Babesia affects the red blood cells and Anaplasma effects the white blood cells.

•             Ticks can be infected with more than one pathogen. When you contract Lyme it is possible to contract more than just that one disease. This is called a co-infection. It is super important to pay attention to your symptoms. See link.
